MEDIA RELEASE
Medical House boosts offer to health professionals with web acquisition
Medical services and equipment group Medical House today announced
its first acquisition of 2000. This follows the announcement last
year of its intention to form a multi-faceted medical services group
for health professionals worldwide.
Formed by Chief Executive Ian Townsend and his partner Gerry Kemp
around successful orthopaedic manufacturer Eurocut,
the group has acquired the Leeds medical services web group Medecal
Ltd for an undisclosed sum.
Townsend believes this new addition to the aggressively expanding
group to be a significant step forward. The Healthworks
web site, owned by Medecal Ltd, has an enviable list of blue-chip
customers and suppliers, as well as being a key source of information
for most of the UK medical schools and universities, hospitals and
libraries worldwide. Healthworks is also a key supplier
of research information to the European Space Agency.
The acquisition will be followed by an investment of up to £1m
to build the capability of the web operation and bring the business
into line with the Medical House group. There are already plans
for the website to be expanded to include a medical business
park, enabling the professional user to visit other medical
providers. Additional staff will be recruited into marketing, research
and administration roles early this year.
The Healthworks website (www.healthworks.co.uk), which has been
established for 5 years, currently receives 120,000 hits a month
and generated sales of over £250,000 last year. Significantly
it has a worldwide database of 35,000 customers, of which 92% are
GPs, consultants, teaching personnel and other medical practitioners.
This is an extremely useful asset to the present members of the
Medical House group and will prove invaluable to other medical companies
joining the group.
"The Internet is already playing a major role in the development
of the medical industry and is set to become a vital source of shared
information over the next few years. Consequently the Healthworks
acquisition should keep us at the forefront of technology for years
to come," said Townsend.
Healthworks is headed by pioneer's of Healthworks Steve McCann.and
Simon Chapman.
"This acquisition gives our business huge potential",
commented McCann. "In a climate of web mania we
had to be careful that any dealings were with a truly strategic
partner who saw our business as a good long-term asset. Our reputation
as a world-class source of up to the minute data and research material
is unrivalled and the ability to offer more services via the Medical
House will make us an even more attractive supplier."

Townsend launched the aggressive acquisition campaign during the
last quarter of 99 with the aim of creating a one-stop
shop of medical organisations under one roof which would benefit
from cost savings and the advantages of shared marketing resource
and expertise.

Notes to editors:
Medical House - The concept
Ian Townsend (the former Chief Executive of Sheffield United PLC)
together with his partner Gerry Kemp, has launched a new company
called the Medical House and set it on an acquisition trail.
The aim is to develop Medical House into a collection of businesses
within the medical world. It will offer the opportunity for the
spectacular growth associated with Blue Sky ventures, whilst providing
a safety net of companies with solid earnings.
What it means?
Having reviewed the market, they feel there is an opportunity to
fill a gap:
Most companies rely on one product / invention to generate investment
return, which whilst it can offer significant return, this can
also result in significant losses
Solid companies provide secure earnings, without the opportunity
for dramatic returns
A combination of both gives potential investors the security
of return with the excitement of spectacular growth potential
and the medical sector provides a unique opportunity for this
The present
The Medical House is currently talking to a number of companies
which it feels will provide the correct balance of solid earning
and growth potential within the sector. It is continually on the
look out for more.
Background
Eurocut

is Eurocut, Europes leading manufacturer of orthopedic instruments.
Established for 11 years, it employs nearly 70 people in Sheffield
and has sales in excess of £4m per annum. In October 1999,
orders were reported at record levels.
